Changing a Mindset
It's funny how my brain "defaults" to the word I'm trying NOT to use.....

Have you ever received one of those forwarded emails where basically you read a few paragraphs with lots of letters and words missing, but you can actually read it anyway!? It's been interesting to me over the past few weeks that certain words, phrases, even thoughts, are so ingrained in our brains that we almost CANNOT say it or think it differently! So do you think I've totally lost it?? Well, that may be the case...but let me tell you what I mean!

For now, the focus will be on Group Personal Training-meaning 4-6 people training with a trainer in a facility that only holds 4-6 people plus a trainer. If you follow my blog-just lie to me and say you do :)-you may remember the . It was about a Continuing Education Module I recently completed, giving me some great information about what AFAA calls "Multiple Client Training".
"Multiple Client Training" kinda just says what it is.....but it's lacking that little bit of pizazz that I like!haha! But....when I said the phrase "Group Personal Training" did you, along with myself and many others, automatically think "Group Exercise Classes"? Or maybe you didn't think that at all cuz you're way smarter than me :)

Let me just say I have spent the past weeks trying to describe what we're doing without using the words "Group" or "Exercise" or "Classes". Not an easy task! These terms are so imbedded in my vocabulary that I use them without thinking <insert joke here-haha!> Although... it's only been in the past 8 years or so we've even used the term "Group Exercise Classes". Before that it was "Fitness Classes" and before that they were "Aerobics Classes"! Yep, I'm old!! Been in this business for over 27 years! ....Back in the old days we walked to our classes....in the snow....uphill...
To get things going we decided to create a start-up schedule (yeah, a little bit like a "Group Exercise" schedule :0) We'll offer a variety of training packages with 4-8 sessions, usually meeting once a week, over a period of 4-8 weeks. To be honest, it's taken me this long to stop saying "classes" instead of packages or sessions.
I suspect that probably the only way to make this new adventure fly will be to keep having conversations with people and to continue to work at re-thinking the old thought process. Maybe I should put a rubberband around my wrist and snap it everytime I use the word "classes" instead of "packages"...
As far as the Personal Training Studio goes-I used my friend, "Thesaurus" to try and find another word for "group". I found some interesting suggestions but none that would work for me. So for now.... "Group Personal Training" is an affordable way to take advantage of the personal attention of, well...a Personal Trainer but enjoy the social aspect of being with others! But, remember, it's NOT "Group Exercise Classes".
