What is cold brewed coffee, and can I do it? You bet you can and you will have the best tasting coffee for all your iced and blended coffee drinks this summer.
Ever wonder how some coffee shops get that great coffee flavor in the iced or blended drinks when all you can do at home is make a weak version of it?
You may think it is brewed in a drip brewer double strength or they some other appliance that brews coffee that way. Well I will let you in on a little secret. They use a method called cold brewing. This method allows you to brew coffee that is stronger and a lot less bitter than traditional brewing.
Cold brewing coffee begins with fresh roasted good quality coffee and good water. If you get either of these wrong you will compromise the great taste you would otherwise receive. You are also going to need to pitchers and a coffee filter. You can also use a French Press or you can purchase the Toddy Cold Brew system. Whatever your choice of brewing appliances, you will end up with a great cup of coffee.

First you need to add your coffee to your brewing container. For 3 2oz of water I use about 6 heaping tablespoons of coffee. After you have added your coffee you pour your room temperature water over the coffee stir the mixture for about a minute then you let it sit in the fridge for 3-4 hours or if you have time let it sit over night.
Once it has sat for the required time if you are using the pitcher method you need to filter the coffee grounds from the water. All you do in pour the mixture into a coffee filter that is in your coffee basket into your coffee carafe. Now you have a great coffee to make all kinds of cold coffee drinks. If you are using a French Press all you do is press the plunger down and pour off the coffee. The Toddy system has its own instructions so follow those.

What you have when you are finished is coffee unlike you have ever had. It is smooth and crisp and rich and full bodied. This method only extracts the good flavors from the coffee and not the bitter flavors. You will be amazed at how good this is and once you do it a couple of time you will see how simple it truly is to make a coffee for the best iced coffee ever.
