Shopping Local: Hair Cuttery

Getting a haircut is among my least favorite activities.  The most memorable was the day that I asked for a trim, to find out the stylist’s idea of “trim” was about 10 inches chopped off.  Yep, not a fan of someone with sharp scissors next to my head, but unfortunately shorter hair just fits my lifestyle, and so periodically I have to muster my courage and just go.

I found out a couple of years ago that the Yorkville is locally owned.  I’m a big fan of supporting local business whenever I can- tax dollars are put into our community, jobs are created, and everyone benefits.  There is also a pride of ownership that I see when a business is run by a local individual.  Their business is a reflection on them, and it shows in how the business is managed.  Hair Cuttery is no exception.

When you first walk in the door, you notice how clean it is.  You don’t see gobs of hair on the floor or the sandwich some kid left behind still sitting on the seat.  There are many hair products for sale at the front of the store, all neatly arranged and clearly labeled.  And my favorite- as I walked in the door, I was immediately greeted with a cheerful  “hi- give me just a second and I will be right with you!”

I was welcomed by a stylist who helped me settle into the chair, then started to ask me what I wanted done.  I said the nerve-wracking words “a GOOD trim”, and then she and I started to define what exactly I meant by a “trim”.  We finally settled on about an inch and a half, with her confirming that I was sure that was how much I wanted cut.

After a quick shampoo and conditioning treatment we went back to her station where she started to cut my hair.  She was very nice, and her work station was organized with just a few photos on the mirror.  She said she had worked there for about 8 months, but told me she had wanted to work there for 3 years before she finally was hired because “no one ever quits!” and she had to wait for a spot to open.  She raved about how nice everyone she works with is, and how much she enjoys working there.

She asked how much time I had, and if I was on a tight schedule.  I told her I was OK on time, but she still promised to have me out in about 45 minutes.  Haircut, blowdry, and done in 48 minutes.  I’m impressed not only with the time, but also the haircut and style.  I got exactly what I asked for- a good trim, and it was styled well enough for me to go straight back to work.

Hair Cuttery is located at 775 Erica Lane, in Kendall Marketplace on the west side of town.  In addition to haircuts, they offer color and highlights in addition to several lines of salon hair products.  And they offer feather extensions, which I have to admit I’m mulling over for Christmas for one of my girls.  $10 to have a colored feather attached to her hair that will stay in for several weeks.  While it’s not the look I’m going for at this point in my life, I know she would be thrilled.  We will have to see if Santa includes a gift certificate for that in her stocking!
