Shopping Local: Katydidit Flowers

A 30-day challenge to shop local takes her to Katydidit Flowers.

One of the best things about doing this 30 Days of Shopping Local challenge is the chance to stop in places I have never visited before.  I have some incredible places I never would have known about, and have some new favorite stores and restaurants as a result.  at 155 E. Veterans Parkway is now one of them.

I think flower shop, and I think of a retail store filled with nothing but flowers.  Planters and vases to go with it, but I anticipate very little beyond, well, flowers!  And then I went into Katydidit Flowers.  Candles and specialty hand lotions at the front door.  Seasonal decorations literally lining the walls and displays.  A large Christmas tree filled with ornaments towards the back.  Definitely not what I was expecting!

The other thing that surprised me was the prices.  Everything was incredibly reasonable.  With 4 kids, I stopped an annual tradition of buying each child an ornament several years ago.  It simply got too expensive.  As I looked at the charming ornaments scattered throughout the store, I realized that I could buy really nice ornaments for each kid at a fraction of what I have paid in the past.

I had figured about five minutes for my visit, as my goal was to walk in, find out what the store was about, and leave with enough information to write for the blog.  Thirty minutes and a good portion of my Christmas shopping done, I finally left, two large bags in hand.  Candles, ornaments, and other gifts from Katydidit Flowers will be sitting under the tree for several people on my list.

And as I finished my shopping trip, a man entered in a panic looking for flowers.  Katie walked him to the back and showed him a variety of beautifully arranged vases, available for cash and carry.  A woman entered and started to browse.  And as the phone rang with orders, I was surprised by just how busy this flower shop truly is.
