Community Kids Making a Splash with ‘Little Mermaid’ Production

Yorkville and Plainfield Youth Casts Take the Stage Nov. 17-18

Set sail for a tale about a tail with Your Performing Arts Center and its fall youth production “Little Mermaid, Junior.”

The vision for the show embraces the concept of following your dreams, according to Beth Jackson, Your Performing Arts Center (YPAC) theatre director.

“This is an incredibly big show with many songs,” she said. “We wanted the classic tale to come to life, through the bright use of color and creative set!”

The shows features youth, ages 5 to 18, who have been working closely together on the colorful, lively show since September. The 110 youth within the two casts represent several communities, including Yorkville, Newark, Sugar Grove, Big Rock, Plainfield, Plano, Montgomery, Oswego, Somonauk, Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, Lockport, Romeoville, and Channahon.

“‘Little Mermaid Junior’ is full of dynamic characters and fun choreography,” said Jackson. “Our actors have been working rather hard on vocals, character development, dance numbers and more. They look and sound fantastic!”

In addition to Jackson, the YPAC theatre team for the fall 2017 production includes creative director Mia Mellecker; choreographer Amanda Arnold; assistant director Aaron Flynn-Holbach; stage manager Emily Schreiber; and amazing teen and adult volunteers.

“We have a program at YPAC that is called The Learning Experience,” said Jackson. “We take students who have shown great leadership in their classes, along with a love and interest in learning the ropes behind the scenes, and we equip them to run a show from beginning to end!”

“Little Mermaid Junior” marks the 12th YPAC theatre production since the arts center was first opened in Yorkville by Brian and Emily Weber.

There are two casts – one from the Yorkville center and one from the Plainfield center – with four shows Nov. 17-18 at Community Christian Church, 24035 Riverwalk Court, Plainfield.
