Extra Points: Foxes Racing Toward Regionals

With its last regular season game Thursday, Yorkville girls basketball team eyes playoffs.

The Yorkville High Foxes’ regular season is coming to an end. With their last game against Morris this Thursday, they’re already preparing for their regional tournament next week.

At the Class 3A Aurora Regional taking place at the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA) next Tuesday, the Foxes, seeded second, will play third seed Rosary at 8:10 p.m. to determine the outcome of their season.

“(Rosary’s) a good team,” Yorkville’s coach Luke Engelhardt said. “They’re very similar to the teams we’ve played this year. I’m anticipating it across the board, one seed through five seed. It’s going to be a pretty spaced out regional.”

If Yorkville defeats Rosary, it will play the winner of Tuesday’s game between first seed Aurora Central Catholic and either Sandwich or IMSA, which will be determined by their game Monday.

The final regional game will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The regional winner advances to sectionals.

Engelhardt believes Yorkville can beat Rosary and is preparing to play them with the same tactics the Foxes used against Sandwich on Tuesday night.

“We like to play pressure defense. It doesn’t matter who we play, we’re going to try to get some turnovers forced on them,” Engelhardt said. “I know (Rosary’s) a decent team handling the ball, but we’re going to still try doing the same thing. It’ll be a good game, we’re excited about it.”
