Forget a Long John 'Silver' - We're Going for 'Gold'

Yorkville Patch pits Long John donuts against each other to find the local franchise with the finest.

Often, the madness of mornings leads to skipping basics such as a shower or the most essential meal of the day. But there are quick ways to still have a delicious start. Nothing beats a coffee or hot chocolate and a classic Long John donut early in the morning on a cold winter day. (Maybe you're like me and cannot consume a meal, including breakfast, without soda).

I visited a few Yorkville locations to see what stores have the best tasting Long John donuts for busy people looking for an early morning goodness or an afternoon delight. What I found was surprising.

I began this segment at a place I believed to be a top notch donut contender. This location, however, did not live up to its name. I pulled up to the drive-thru and received my donut in a paper bag. It did not come with a protective layer and I was afraid the frosting would rub off inside the bag. But I did not have to worry about that.

After taking a good look at the donut, its exterior appeared a bit rough. Its color, a bit darker that a normal looking Long John, resembled card board instead of a golden chocolate-topped over-sized nugget. The frosting was a bit stiff and looked as if it had been splattered on in a rush. (For me, donuts are the type of delicacy that require tender love and care during their creation. It shows in the final product)

After a few bites, I reached the center cream filling. Sadly, the cream filling was not the best. The filling had more of a texture instead of sleek creaminess to it. This was not the best I’ve tasted.

The Good: Nothing
The Bad: The donuts certainly weren’t dunkin’ at this Dunkin Donuts.

Right next door, you'll find this handy convenience store where you can swoop in, pump gas, purchase a meal, and head on your way in a matter of minutes. At this quick one stop shop, quantity and quality matter. Not only was there a large variety of food available, each item looked amazing. The sandwiches were huge and the food looked fresh. The pastries were no exception.

The Long John I consumed looked fresh at first sight and felt tender to the touch. It was like taking a bite out of a cloud. The frosting was sweet and complemented the savory cream filling.

The creamy filling sealed the deal for me. This dainty delicacy  was officially most delectable. I could have warmed it in the microwave provided in the food area, but there was no need. With the choice of any drinks at my disposal for under $2, I was a very satisfied customer.

The Good: This Long John blew me away. It was soft, creamy, and tasty. After eating this small bar shaped cake I was very full (and happy).
The Bad: All the other food looked just as delicious.

I was utterly disappointed when I visited Jewel to find Long Johns here are made with no filling. What is a Long John with no filling? (There is no point if you ask me).

The donut itself was soft and appealing. The chocolate frosting covered a larger portion of the donut and contained an extra kick with white frosting laced on top. This was a good donut, but would have been great if it was injected with cream filling.

The Good: The donut was average.
The Bad: I did not get the wonderful burst of filling I expected.

The winner: am/pm Convenience Store has the largest selection of fast fresh food. The donuts were no exception.
