Inmates Help Out Kendall County Animal Control
The work is part of a program allowing inmates at Kendall County Jail to make a contribution to society while incarcerated.
YORKVILLE, IL — Kendall County Animal Control is receiving a helping hand through a program allowing inmates at the Kendall County Jail to spend their days working at the facility. The purpose of the program is to give inmates a sense of accomplishment when they leave the correctional facility.
Three inmates currently participate in the program, said Deputy Nancy Velez of the Kendall County Sheriff's Office. Their responsibilities at the facility include power washing kennels and cages, washing out food and water bowls, sweeping, mopping, planting flowers and other various cleaning duties. Velez said the Sheriff's Office is exploring the possibility of adding a community service component to the program.
The program is available to select inmates who are deemed non-violent, follow the rules of the jail and have no disciplinary issues while incarcerated. The inmates selected for the program show a willingness to work and excitement for the opportunity. While working at the facility, inmates are supervised by a deputy.

Sheriff Dwight Baird said the program was made possible thanks to collaborative efforts between the County Board and Kendall County Animal Control. “This is an excellent program allowing for inmates to be productive and contribute to society during their time of incarceration, and also provide a valued service to the Animal Control facility and the animals housed within,” Baird said.
