Kendall County Sex Offender Gets Prison for Failing to Register

He will spend nearly eight years behind bars.

OSWEGO, IL — A convicted sex offender was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for repeatedly failing to register as a sex offender.

Michael A. Najar, 43, of the 5700 block of Route 34 in Oswego, was originally charged back in September 2014 when he failed to report to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office as required by the Sex Offender Registration Act. This case was heard by a Kendall County jury who found Najar guilty back in August of this year, according to a news release from the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office. For this offense, he was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison. While on bond for the original charge, Najar again failed to report to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office in March 2015. Najar entered a plea of guilty to that offense and was sentenced to 4 years in prison.

By law, Najar must serve a total of 7.5 years. Najar will also have to serve 2 years of mandatory supervised release. Najar has a history of non-compliance with reporting as well as an extensive criminal record, according to the news release.

“Requiring those who are mandated to register and report as sex offenders to comply with their registration requirements is vital to the protection of our community. Those that choose to ignore these laws will face punishment,” Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis said in a news release. “Hopefully, these sentences will make others think about the consequences before failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements.”
