Bill For Indiana Insect Backed By Students Passes Senate

A student-backed bill for the Say's firefly to become Indiana's insect was unanimously passed by the Senate's public policy committee: More

ACROSS INDIANA — The Associated Press reports four years worth of efforts by Indiana elementary students in the fight for a state insect has taken a big step forward in the Statehouse. According to AP News, the bill for the Say’s firefly to become the state insect was unanimously passed by the Senate’s public policy committee on Tuesday. The bill will now move to the house after previous efforts in both the Senate and House haven't made it past committee hearings, AP News says.

Nearly a dozen students from Cumberland and Happy Hallow elementary schools went to the Indiana Statehouse Jan. 31 to debate their case for the Say's firefly to become the state insect.

AP News says student Kayla Xu has worked on the project since the 2014-15 school year, telling the Senate committee that choosing the insect would draw people from across the country to visit Indiana.
