StoryWalk is an innovative and delightful way for children—and adults—to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time. Pages from this children’s book will be installed in storefronts in the Arts & Design District. As readers stroll down the trail, they will discover the next page in the story.

A Piece of Chalk by Jennifer Ericsson is a simple, well-written story of a girl making a sidewalk chalk drawing, realizing the joy of creating art, and embracing unexpected changes to her creation. The pictures are bright and eye-catching, and the storefront signs will include interactive questions and challenges. The StoryWalk will start at the CCPL Digital Media Lab (23 E. Main St.). Click here for a map of all the locations where you'll find a StoryWalk page. Participants can also take a picture of the sign at CCPL Digital Media Lab to know where to go.

During the Digital Media Lab's open hours, you can stop by to pick up sidewalk chalk take-and-makes (while supplies last) and participate in digital art activities. While on the StoryWalk make sure to stop at The World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery (40 W. Main St.) where children are welcome to make their own sidewalk chalk art in the garden.

StoryWalk in the Arts & Design District also runs concurrently in celebration of Children’s Book Week, which is November 8-14.

CCPL StoryWalk was created in effort to find innovative ways to navigate through the pandemic, as well as a move to a temporary location while the library undergoes major renovations without ever having to completely shut down its services to its cardholders.

This CCPL StoryWalk is presented in partnership with the City of Carmel and the merchants of the Arts & Design District.

Public parking is available in the Carmel Lions Club lot (141 E. Main St.), Sophia Square parking garage (entrance off of 1st Ave NW), Indiana Design Center parking garage (200 S. Range Line Rd.) or on-street.
