IMPD Identifies Suspect Shot By Officers In Christmas Eve Chase

IMPD officers identify man who was shot by police following brief pursuit on Christmas Eve.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials have identified the suspect involved in a theft/robbery Sunday morning, where officers shot the suspect several times following a brief car chase. IMPD says 39-year-old Alhadji Bayon was arrested and preliminary charged with robbery, resisting law enforcement by fleeing and theft with prior conviction following the theft/robbery at Phillips 66 station at McFarland and Southport Road. IMPD reports Bayon remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. IMPD says the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a charging decision.

Bayon matched a description in another incident, and police began chasing the suspect and bumped his car to force it to stop near East Raymond Street and Ransdell Street, said Deputy Chief Chris Bailey of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said the suspect refused orders to get out of the car and a SWAT team was called in. Suddenly the suspect kicked open the car door, but it swung back and closed. He kicked open the door a second time and got out of the car.

That's when police said he turned towards officers and reached into his waistband. Three officers opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

Police later said he was reaching for a pipe that looked to have a handle.
