Indiana Woman Tried To Kill Baby With Tainted Milk: Police

Where police believe the woman accused of trying to kill baby with tainted breast milk fled to after being charged Monday.

FORT WAYNE, IN — Authorities report a Fort Wayne woman is accused of putting pain relief medication in a bottle of breast milk in an attempt to kill her infant niece, because she was upset she had to share her and her mother's home with relatives, according to Associated Press. Officials said 19-year-old Sarai Rodriguez-Miranda was charged with attempted murder on Monday for the January poisoning attempt, AP reports. Police believe she fled to Michigan after learning she was under investigation.

Police allege Rodriguez-Miranda was angry that her brother, his fiance and their infant daughter were staying at the Fort Wayne home, and because her mother agreed they could stay longer.

AP reports the woman's mother found text messages on a cellphone they shared, where her daughter told her own boyfriend about her attempts to kill the infant, leading Rodriguez-Miranda's mother to check bottles of breast milk in the refrigerator. That's where she discovered one bottle containing milk darker than the other bottle's contents, in addition to a greenish-colored ring and residue at the bottom, which according to court documents was the equivalent of nine Excedrin tablets or capsules.

While the baby was not fed from either bottle, Rodriguez-Miranda's mother took the infant and the baby's mother to the emergency room, according to AP.

AP adds while there were no signs of poisoning detected, court documents report the amount of pain reliever in the bottle was enough to kill an adult.

As of Thursday, Rodriguez-Miranda remains at large.
