Robbery Suspect Shot By Police After Car Chase In Indianapolis

Police said the suspect reached into his waistband for a pipe that looked to have a handle.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Police officers shot a suspect multiple times in Indianapolis on Christmas Eve following a brief car chase, and the suspect is in serious condition, police said. It all started with a theft/robbery on Sunday morning at a Phillips 66 station at McFarland and Southport Road, said Deputy Chief Chris Bailey of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The suspect matched a description in another incident. Police began chasing the suspect and bumped his car to force it to stop near East Raymond Street and Ransdell Street.

Police said the suspect refused orders to get out of the car and a SWAT team was called in. Suddenly the suspect kicked open the car door, but it swung back and closed. He kicked open the door a second time and got out of the car.

That's when police said he turned towards officers and reached into his waistband. Three officers opened fire, striking the suspect multiple times.
