Local Shelters, Warming Centers Filling Up

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — With temperatures "peaking" to only 24 degrees Saturday, it will continue to be a frigid week across Indianapolis. For that reason, a number of places are being warming centers for those in need of shelter from the cold. According to their websites, social media pages, and information sent to Patch, these include:

• Wheeler Mission Ministries Shelter for Men - 205 E. New York St.; and their women and children's shelter
• The Dayspring Center - very limited space at 1537 Central Ave. location
• Salvation Army - lobbies open as warming centers

Other centers and services are also on the lookout as local needs continue to arise.

"We do not have any centers open right now in the metro area," Vanessa Davis, Director of Operations for American Red Cross' Central Indiana Chapter and Executive Director of the West Central Indiana Chapter, said in an email to Patch. "We are standing ready to support County EMA directors and other organizations and, if there happens to be a larger scale event, we are always prepared to respond to the needs that arise.."

Patch is waiting on responses from a few local shelters and will update this list as information comes in.
