FISHERS, IN — AP News reports a suburban Indianapolis man faces felony charges following the November death of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son. According to the news source, 23-year-old Michael P. Atkinson of Danville was charged Wednesday with neglect of a dependent causing death and aggravated battery in the Nov. 11 incident, when Danville police and firefighters responded to a call about an unconscious boy in town. He died Nov. 13 at an Indianapolis hospital.
According to AP News, police say a medical examiner ruled the boy's death a homicide and found he died from blunt-force trauma. They have not released the child's name.
Danville police said in a statement that the department is "deeply saddened" by the boy's death.

As of Thursday Atkinson remains in the Hendricks County Jail, and AP News reports there aren't any attorneys listed online who could speak on his behalf.
