Fishers Invites Companies To Use Less Paper, Plant More Trees

Fishers Parks & Recreation and Wasson Nursery kick off Set Roots Corporate Tree Initiative. How and why to join:

FISHERS, IN β€” If you're part of a local business or organization, Fishers Parks & Recreation and Wasson Nursery want to challenge you to help reforest our city by being part of the Set Roots Corporate Tree Initiative. Fishers Parks & Recreation says it's partnering with Wasson Nursery to launch the initiative which is focused on reforesting Fishers, reducing consumption and connecting the community. Fishers Parks & Recreation says they're doing this through challenging local groups to plant a tree in Fishers parks for every one to 50,000 pieces of paper used, in an effort to help offset paper consumption.

Several businesses have made the pledge, including OneZone, Meyer Najem, Purdue University and others.

Wasson Nursery will help organizations pick out their donated tree based on park location or tree species, in addition to installing the trees biannually during spring and fall Keep Fishers Beautiful events, Fishers Parks & Recreation says.

To maintain and manage the number of trees planted and data, the City of Fishers Department of Public Works will use GIS maps, officials say.

Fishers Parks & Recreation says that studies show the average office worker uses 10,000 pieces of paper each year and only one 15-year-old tree produces only a half box of paper. More trees and less paper consumption are needed.

Fishers Department of Public Works said they planted 210 trees in the community during 2017.

In order to help the City with their wish to increase that number in 2018, both small and large organizations are invited to participate in the Set Roots Corporate Tree Initiative by completing the online pledge.

"With the new Set Roots initiative, our goal of planting more trees and reforesting felled trees in Fishers’ parks is becoming a reality,” said Fishers Parks & Recreation Director Tony Elliot, in a release sent to Patch. β€œFrom reducing smog to producing oxygen and intercepting airborne pollutants, trees are an important asset to our community.”

Fishers Parks & Recreation's Set Roots partner, Wasson Nursery, opened just over a year ago in Fishers during April 2017.

"We are so excited to be part of this project," added Wasson Nursery Marketing Director Alyssa Quyle, in a release sent to Patch. "After setting our own roots in Fishers in April 2017, we look forward to becoming an active part of this growing community. We could not think of a better way to get involved than helping aid in creating a lasting legacy in Fishers parks."
