Indiana State Police says a trooper was shot in the head during a traffic stop in Jeffersonville, before firing back at shooter: MORE

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN — Indiana State Police reports their Trooper Morgenn Evans was shot in the head during a traffic stop Tuesday night near the intersection of Park and Jefferson Streets in Jeffersonville. ISP says the Sellersburg Trooper made a traffic stop for a traffic infraction just after 7 p.m., pulling over a gray 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck being driven by 79-year-old Oscar Kays. Kays reportedly chose to fight Trooper Evans by pulling out a gun and firing, which struck the law enforcement official in the head. According to ISP, Trooper Evans was able to shoot back at Kays while the man fled the scene.

Evans got into his police car and chased Kays, who was taken into custody by the Jeffersonville City Police Department and the Clark County Sheriff's Department at his Huston Drive home.

ISP says Trooper Evans was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky with non-life threatening injuries. Kays was taken to the same hospital with unknown injuries, ISP says. He's been a trooper since Oct. 2016.
