After years of being sedentary post–open-heart surgery, he's been transformed by training, and his granddaughter believes he'll still complete a triathlon, even as she races in Chicago this weekend.
2. Storm damages Steel City's new home (chicagotribune.com) — Steel City Academy in Gary is reassessing its renovation plans after the Aug. 11 storm ripped off part of the gym roof and downed trees at its future Polk Street campus. School leaders are now working with insurers, architects, and contractors to understand how repairs will affect their budget and timeline for opening, and what that means for eventually selling their current building.
3. Disturbing Footage Shows Beyoncé, 18, Sitting On a Man's Lap (sandrarose.com) — A resurfaced clip of 18-year-old Beyoncé sitting on an older man's lap while speaking with Michael Jackson has sparked online criticism of the adults around her. The post sharing the video also includes separate footage of Jackson confidently guiding viewers through his childhood home in Gary briefly putting the city in the spotlight for fans revisiting his roots.
4. 18 Vintage Photos of Drive-Ins Restaurants Across America (cheapism.com) — One vintage photo in this national drive-in roundup spotlights Ted's Drive-In in Gary showing a local carhop uniform that looked more like a marching band outfit. While most of the piece tours classic drive-ins around the country, it offers a nostalgic glimpse of how Gary once fit into that midcentury cruising-and-root-beer culture.
