1. Following Severe Storms, Northwest Indiana Animal Shelters Face a Dual Crisis of Outages and Intakes (lakeshorepublicmedia.org) — Animal shelters across Northwest Indiana are strained after last week's storms, and Gary's Humane Society of Northwest Indiana in Miller is still operating on generators while caring for animals. The shelter urgently needs wet dog and cat food and cleaning supplies, while Munster's Humane Indiana seeks volunteers and donations to handle 48 rescued dogs from a hoarding case.
2. Son of Gary man facing deportation sues ICE for house raid (chicagotribune.com) — A Gary family has filed a federal lawsuit accusing ICE agents of using excessive force during a raid on their Gary home last October, while the father awaits deportation. As they pursue damages in court, the family is also coping with ongoing power outages from the Aug. 11 storms that continue to affect many Gary residents.
3. Tens of thousands of Hoosiers remain without power in Northwest Indiana (wrtv.com) — Many Gary residents are still without electricity more than a week after deadly storms, with NIPSCO saying full restoration may not come until Tuesday. Locals are throwing out spoiled food, enduring summer heat, and relying on city-provided meals while crews repair hundreds of damaged poles and officials push for faster progress.
4. Howell, Watson and Flores power RailCats past Dogs (nwitimes.com) — Gary baseball fans just watched the RailCats notch their second straight win at The Steel Yard, powered by big bats from Korry Howell, Marc Flores and Kevin Watson Jr. The Cats' 8–1 victory over the Chicago Dogs tightens their playoff chase, pulling them within 4.5 games of the Railroaders heading into tonight's 6:45 p.m. series finale.
5. 'This was amazing': Volunteers, agencies provide post-storm assistance in Portage Township (chicagotribune.com) — Storm recovery volunteers in Portage Township are distributing food, tarps, and other essentials as NIPSCO works toward fully restoring power in Portage and Gary by Aug. 25. Residents from nearby communities are relying on generators, emergency shelters, and donated meals while they clear debris and restock empty refrigerators after the Aug. 11 derecho.
