1. Gary emergency financial assistance program update (nwitimes.com) — Gary residents still recovering from the recent derecho can see how the city's Emergency Financial Assistance Program has grown to $500,000, helping more than a thousand local households with urgent needs like food, hygiene items, and emergency repairs. Funded through the Greater Gary Storm Recovery Fund and Legacy Foundation, the program shows how quickly local partners mobilized to get cash directly into residents' hands.

2. Indiana Congressman calls for federal investigation into weeks-long NIPSCO power outages (indianapublicradio.org) — Gary households hit by August's nearly two‑week NIPSCO power outages may see new scrutiny of what went wrong, as Rep. Frank Mrvan urges federal regulators to investigate the utility's storm preparedness and grid reliability. He's questioning how a system upgraded with billions in ratepayer funds still failed so badly, and wants NIPSCO's performance compared with neighboring utilities to prevent a repeat.

3. Russell Thompkins & The New Stylistics headed to Hard Rock Casino in Gary (thelansingjournal.org) — Fans of classic soul in Gary can catch Russell Thompkins & The New Stylistics headlining a Soul Jam show at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana's Hard Rock Live on Saturday, Oct. 24. With supporting acts including the Dramatics, Enchantment, and Ray, Goodman & Brown, tickets start at $60.90 for this 21-and-over, reserved-seating concert right off the I-80/94 Burr Street Interchange.

4. Marquette Greenway about 65% complete but toughest sections remain (chicagotribune.com) — Sections of the Marquette Greenway running through Gary's Miller area and west side are among the toughest and most expensive pieces left before the 60‑mile trail is complete. Planners are working on connections from the Douglas Center parking lot through Broadway and Bridge Street to Cline Avenue, but funding gaps and complex bridges mean Gary may need to help push these key links over the finish line.

5. Nearly $2B in facility investments by US Steel, USA Rare Earth and more (manufacturingdive.com) — U.S. Steel has restarted its massive Blast Furnace 14 in Gary after a $350 million reline, restoring capacity to produce over 2 million tons of hot metal a year. The months-long project brought up to 1,000 workers on-site daily and extended the furnace's life, anchoring jobs and steel production in Gary while other manufacturers nationwide announce major facility investments.
