Homeowners in Gary may qualify for free weatherhead repairs, and major donations are funding direct relief for home repairs, supplies, and recovery support across the city.
2. Lake County finance director details how property tax cuts will affect Gary (chicagotribune.com) — Gary residents are being warned that new state property tax cuts could force the city to adopt about a 1.34% local income tax, on top of a projected county increase, to avoid major service cuts. At a community forum, Lake County's finance director detailed how Senate Enrolled Act 1 will cost Gary millions in revenue by 2028, hitting public safety and development funds especially hard.

NIPSCO questioned by Indiana lawmakers after August storms leave thousands without power (wgntv.com) — State lawmakers are scrutinizing NIPSCO's handling of the August derecho that left many Gary residents without power for about two weeks and caused major losses of food and belongings. At a hearing, Gary's mayor and utility officials described 100 mph winds, thousands of broken poles, and massive repair efforts, while legislators pressed for stronger grid resilience before the next big storm.
