1. City of Gary breaks ground on veterans housing project (nwitimes.com) — Gary has broken ground on a $2.5 million Veterans Housing Project in Veterans Village, adding five single-family homes plus a community clubhouse and play area. City leaders say the development, backed by federal and corporate partners, is meant to anchor the neighborhood and support more than 3,000 veterans who call Gary home.

FEMA delivers additional $56.5 million to help fire departments and other first responder organizations in Region 5 (wbiw.com) — Gary is set to receive more than $6.2 million from FEMA to hire additional firefighters, part of a larger $56.5 million regional funding package. The money will help the city bolster staffing and safety resources, improving emergency response capacity for residents as FEMA invests heavily in fire protection across the Midwest.

NIPSCO apologizes as Gary residents take their anger to the statehouse (suntimes.com) — Gary residents who endured two to three weeks without power after the August 11 storm are demanding answers, prompting NIPSCO's president to apologize during a Statehouse hearing. Local speakers and Mayor Eddie Melton pressed for better communication, stronger staffing, and clear restoration estimates as lawmakers weigh possible new requirements for utilities after Gary took the brunt of the damage.
4. After Indiana power outage, families are still battling mold, broken fridges, and lost income (thecooldown.com) — Gary families are still grappling with spoiled food, broken appliances, mold, and lost income weeks after August's devastating power outage. Local, state, and federal aid is available, including $500,000 in city relief, FEMA assistance, and help applying at United Steelworkers Local 1014 on Texas Street, while churches and nonprofits continue offering food, cleaning supplies, and temporary shelter.
5. Indiana Gov. Braun extends gas tax holiday, adds diesel relief into November (chicagotribune.com) — Indiana's gas tax holiday and new diesel relief will continue through November 4, and Gary drivers are seeing prices around $3.52 per gallon at some stations. The governor says suspending fuel taxes and rules is meant to ease affordability pressures, while state officials reimburse local governments for lost road revenue during the extended holiday.
