• FEMA delivers additional $56.5 million to help fire departments and other first responder organizations in Region 5 (wbiw.com) — Gary is set to receive more than $6.2 million from FEMA to hire additional firefighters, part of a $56.5 million package for departments across the Great Lakes region. The funding, through federal fire grant programs, is meant to boost staffing, safety, and emergency response capacity, potentially shortening response times and strengthening protection for Gary neighborhoods.
• Planning commission focuses on rebuilding Northwest Indiana's tree canopy (chicagotribune.com) — Gary's battered tree canopy after the August 11 derecho is a key focus as regional planners work on the NWI 2050 plan, aiming to boost urban tree cover significantly by 2035 and 2050. Environmental leaders discussed replacing lost trees with better species, updating planting lists, and using programs like ComuniTrees and Tree City USA to channel funding and guidance to communities like Gary.
• Utilities Study Committee holds inquiry on Aug. storm response (duboiscountyherald.com) — State lawmakers just reviewed how utilities handled the August 11 derecho that slammed Northwest Indiana, taking testimony from Gary Mayor Eddie Melton and utility regulators. They're recommending new laws requiring utilities to keep and update emergency response plans and undergo regular vegetation-management audits, changes that could directly affect how quickly Gary residents get power restored after future severe storms.
