This Gary High School Chosen For 'Student Choice' Lunch Program
New 'Student Choice' program launches at Calumet New Tech High School as Students taste and vote on favorite food stations for lunch menu.

GARY, IN -- A Gary high school wants their students to take charge of what they eat during the school day by implementing a new "Student Choice" program. As one of three chosen high schools across the country, Calumet New Tech High School and its food service partner Chartwells K12 introduced the program on Monday, April 16 when Calumet chefs cook up new recipes from four food stations for students to sample and vote. School officials say the winning choice will be added to their lunch menu in May.
In an effort to re-imagine the school dining experience, school officials and chefs are introducing these four choices from 11 a.m. to noon, April 16 to April 19, to empower students to share their voice and play an active role in choosing what they want to eat at lunch:
- Bok Choy: an exciting sensory experience of Asian food and flavors inspired by celebrity chef Jet Tila.
- Roost: new twists on chicken, prepared in a variety of ways - roasted, baked, grilled, sautéed, and braised.
- Create: BYO (build your own) lunch with rotating stations – sandwiches, pastas, burgers, and much more – truly puts the concept of choice in students’ hands
- Made to Melt: comfort food combined with regionally influenced ingredients showcase “everything cheese” recipes.
Calumet New Tech officials at 3900 Calhoun St, Gary, IN 46408, say the school and Chartwells K12 are committed to collaborating with students to transform the school dining experience and get them excited about new foods and flavors.
