• Judge dismisses Batistatos' defamation suit against Hammond mayor (chicagotribune.com) — A Lake Superior Court judge has dismissed former tourism chief Speros Batistatos' defamation lawsuit against Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott over comments made on the mayor's podcast, though an appeal is still possible. The ruling found McDermott and a Hammond city attorney had a reasonable factual basis for discussing Batistatos' pay and board management, and McDermott now plans to seek reimbursement of legal costs for Hammond taxpayers.
• NMU men's soccer loses for first time in GLIAC (miningjournal.net) — Northern Michigan University's men's soccer team will visit Hammond this Sunday to face Purdue Northwest after dropping its first GLIAC match, a 2-0 loss at Wisconsin-Parkside. Despite the setback, NMU remains in the conference lead and will try to secure at least a share of first place in the noon EDT showdown on Purdue Northwest's home field.
