School City Of Hammond: Notice To Families

Update: August 27 | 9 p.m.

The Hammond Police Department has taken a person of interest into custody for the earlier shooting outside of Hammond Central High School.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, they cannot be identified at this time. The suspect is not a student with School City of Hammond. 

We thank our teachers and staff for their handling of the situation, the Hammond Police Department for working with school officials, and anyone who sent calls or tips to Detective Sgt. Jajowka.

Friday after school dismissal, a shooting occurred near Hammond Central High School.

Hammond police were dispatched to the corner of Calumet Avenue and Highland Street at 2:45 p.m. to a report of a shooting.

Police arrived to find two Hammond Central students injured. The students were transported to nearby hospitals in stable condition.

Three other students involved in the situation remain at large, with the Hammond Police Department investigating.
