15 People, 15 Pets Safe After Morning East Side Fire
IFD says 15 people and 15 pets escaped an early morning fire on North Kitley Avenue.
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indianapolis Fire Department reports a fire broke out Friday morning on the city's east side at North Kitley avenue, as the people inside the double residence say it started in the dryer. IFD reports the occupants say they were awakened by the fire, and were also alerted by neighbors banging on the door. According to IFD, crews arrived at 4 a.m. to heavy smoke showing from the home, but had the fire under control about 20 minutes after arrival. No one was injured, but IFD officials say damage is estimated at $60,000.
IFD says 2432 is rented and occupied by five adults, 11 cats and three dogs, and the 2434 side is rented and occupied by four adults, six children and one dog. However, 2432's renters do not have renters insurance and did not have a working smoke detector.
According to IFD, the department's Victims Assistance also responded and is working with American Red Cross to find shelters for the families.
