As Community Group Budgets Shrink, Indy Speaker’s Bureau Provides Free Programming Across The Circle City

At a time when local non-profits, libraries, and civic groups are stretching every dollar to keep programming alive, an Indianapolis organization is celebrating a milestone by proving that education in the Circle City is still free.

Free Speakers Indianapolis is officially marking its 10^th anniversary. For the last decade, the pro bono speaker’s bureau has operated on a simple premise: connect local experts with community organizations at absolutely zero cost to either party.

Launched a decade ago, the Indianapolis bureau has become a vital piece of the organization's history, helping cement its growth into a thriving national network. What began as a local Chicago-only service has now grown into a national network with bureaus in seven cities across the country (Chicago, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Dallas, Phoenix, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis).

Over the past 10 years, the Indianapolis bureau has fulfilled more than 850 requests from community groups across Marion County and the surrounding cities, from Carmel and Fishers to Greenwood and Speedway. Today, the Indy roster of speakers features local experts covering everything from health wellness to AI technology, business strategy, and personal development.

“When we brought Free Speakers to Indianapolis a decade ago, we knew the city had a rich culture of civic engagement, but the reception has exceeded our expectations,” said Andy Richardson, executive director of Free Speakers Indianapolis. “Especially today, as local groups face tighter budgets, our speakers fill a massive gap. Reaching this 10-year milestone proves just how much Indy organizations value the incredible expertise sitting right in their own backyard.”

Requests for speakers come from a diverse range of Indianapolis-area groups, including:

• Central Indiana public library branches
• Local Chambers of Commerce
• Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions clubs
• Senior living and retirement communities
• Church groups and faith-based organizations
• Women's, men's, and neighborhood associations

The bureau functions entirely as a community service project. There are no catches, no hidden fees, and no monetization. There is never a charge to a group, not from the speaker, and not from the bureau.

“Our speakers are motivated by a desire to give back,” added Richardson. “They aren't looking for a paycheck; they are looking to teach, hone their speaking skills, and share a message. It’s a win-win for everyone involved. As we look toward the next decade, we’re excited to keep connecting Indy’s brightest minds with the grassroots groups that make this region thrive.”

History of Free Speakers

The founder of FreeSpeakers.org is Ginny Richardson of Naperville, IL. During her career in journalism and public relations, she accumulated a vast network of experts and program chairpersons. When local groups would call asking for speaker recommendations for their upcoming meetings, Ginny began connecting them with colleagues who had valuable topics to share.

This casual list grew into a formal bureau in 1996. The name “Free” was, and remains, the core mission. No one involved makes money from the exchange. The reward is found in the contacts made and the goodwill generated within the community.
