📰 News we're reading

1. Indiana's abortion ban has 'chilling effect' in the ER (mirrorindy.org) — Emergency room doctors at Indianapolis hospitals are increasingly hesitant to treat pregnant patients with bleeding, instead sending them to already overburdened OB-GYNs because of Indiana's near-total abortion ban. A new study based in two local hospitals warns this "chilling effect" could delay care for miscarriages and other complications, as more patients from across Indiana travel to Marion County for treatment amid a statewide OB-GYN shortage.

2. Riley Opens Indiana's First Pediatric Medical-Psychiatric Unit (wibc.com) — Riley Children's Health in Indianapolis has opened Indiana's first dedicated pediatric medical-psychiatric unit, giving local families a new option for complex mental and physical health needs close to home. The 11‑bed unit will treat about 325 young patients a year, offering integrated medical and behavioral care, arts therapy spaces, sensory rooms, and an in‑unit classroom, supported by donors through the Riley Children's Foundation.

3. How to vote early in Indiana's 2026 general election (mirrorindy.org) — If you live in Indianapolis or anywhere in Marion County, you'll soon be able to vote early at the City-County Building downtown starting Oct. 6, with eight township sites opening Oct. 24. The guide walks you through where to go, what ID to bring, and how early voting works so you're ready well before Election Day.

4. Indy man sentenced to 23 years in prison after kidnapping ex-girlfriend (fox59.com) — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 23 years in state prison after pleading guilty to multiple felonies tied to kidnapping his ex-girlfriend from her east side home, a case that triggered a statewide Silver Alert in 2025. Prosecutors say he and others forced the woman to leave at gunpoint, and several more serious charges were dropped in the plea deal, noting his prior weapons conviction and probation violations.
