Community members interested in learning one of the world's most popular strategy games are invited to beginner-friendly Learn to Play Mahjong events at the following locations.
·MCL Restaurant &amp; Bakery, Carmel, September 12, 10 am-2 pm
·MCL Restaurant &amp; Bakery, Castleton, September 26, 10 am-2 pm
·MCL Restaurant &amp; Bakery, Avon, October 3, 10 am-2 pm
Designed for first-time players, the event includes step-by-step Mahjong instruction, guided open play to practice new skills, and a Mayfield Plate or Noon Special lunch. No experience needed!
The cost is $65 per person, and advance registration is required. Tickets are available at

The Crown Hill Foundation will celebrate 163 years of Crown Hill Cemetery and Arboretum by opening the doors to one of its most unique evening events, Behind Closed Doors, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
This exclusive after-hours event offers guests rare access to areas of Crown Hill that are not typically open to the public, providing a unique opportunity to experience one of Indianapolis' most treasured historic landmarks after regular visiting hours.
The evening includes:

 <li>Private mausoleum access </li>
 <li>Guided tours led by knowledgeable Crown Hill staff and volunteers </li>
 <li>The premiere screening of Resting Place, a new film developed through the Crown Hill Foundation's Artists in Residence Program</li>
 <li>Appetizers and beverages </li>

"Behind Closed Doors offers guests a chance to experience Crown Hill in an entirely different way," said David Rieck, President, Crown Hill Foundation. Founded in 1863, Crown Hill Cemetery is one of the nation's largest rural cemeteries and serves as the final resting place of presidents, vice presidents, military veterans, civic leaders, artists, athletes, and thousands of Hoosiers whose stories helped shape Indianapolis and the nation.

Behind Closed Doors-Crown Hill After-Hours Experience

September 2 and 3; 6–8:30 p.m. | Center Building, Cantina Cost: $65 | Member Discounts Apply | Ages 18+ Learn the art of traditional case binding in this two-day, hands-on workshop. Participants will build and sew their own text block, then create a durable hardcover book using decorative papers. Each participant will leave with a completed, handcrafted book suitable for journaling, sketching, or creative projects. A variety of decorative papers will be available to personalize your cover. All tools and supplies will be provided. Preregistration is preferred; limited walk-in tickets may be available—please call ahead. For those interested in exploring additional design techniques, Minnetrista is partnering with Art Mart, which is offering a separate paper marbling class. Participants are welcome to bring marbled paper from that experience to use in this workshop, though it is not required. Registration and fees for the marbling class are handled separately through Art Mart.

In the Harrison Gallery, Pursuit of the Muse by Stephanie Spay. In her latest series of oil paintings, Spay explores the transformative power of intuition in a vibrant dialogue with color, seeking to reveal the inherent creativity within. This body of work embodies acts of pursuit and honor of the muse, prioritizing presence and curiosity over the confines of expectation and judgment.
In the Gallery Annex, Family Matters by Lauren Saunders, Stephanie Spay, &amp; Kate Orr. This collection of oil paintings explores the quiet and not-so-quiet moments of family life. Through still lifes, intimate interiors, and figurative works, each artist reflects on the people, places, and everyday experiences that define family.
In the Speck Gallery, The Way Home by Kristi Marsh Watson. Through 2D mixed-media paintings created using an array of art supplies and natural materials, Marsh Watson explores the complexities of middle adulthood. She captures an introspective journey through changing relationships, landscapes, the passage of time, and most importantly, finding home within oneself.
In the City Gallery, A Closer Look by Jason Bailey. Experience the talent of impressionist plein air painter Jason Bailey, who is known for capturing fleeting light, atmosphere, and the energy of a scene through bold, expressive brushwork crafted from direct observation outdoors. This collection of oil paintings made on location invites viewers to slow down and notice the quiet, fleeting details that reveal themselves only with closer attention.
In the Underground Gallery, Stories From a Kite Runner: The Human Desire for Freedom by Qahar Behzad. This immersive exhibition celebrates the beauty, resilience, and rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan through a collection of paintings and handmade kites by Afghan artist Qahar Behzad. Surrounding visitors overhead, a sky of colorful kites transforms the gallery into a space of wonder, inviting audiences to experience the joy, creativity, and symbolism of flight.
In the Hank &amp; Dolly’s Gallery, Whimsy by Kyrie Lewis. Intimate watercolor scenes pair with immaculate acrylics to highlight the important pursuit of whimsy. Lewis invites us to look deeper into an enchanting world of story and fascination to find solace in the midst of unremarkable pain and uncertainty.
In the Sky Gallery, Remnants and Fractures by Quincy Owens. This show comprises two bodies of work that play off each other, with stark black-and-white resin pieces set against a group of vivid paintings. Owens seeks to explore how the left and right hemispheres of his brain work together but separately, exploring beauty in fractures and faults.

On the Sky Deck, Hannah Kaminer, a musician from Asheville, NC, will perform songs from her two 48-hour residencies. Eden Pixar-Byeon from Guatemala will perform music from her five-week residency.
Hungry? Grab a bite across the courtyard from The Garnacha Spot food truck for delicious street food. Cool off with free ice cream at the Courtyard entrance!
All shows will open at 6:00 pm on Friday, September 4th, 2026.
Visitors can take in-person gallery tours Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Online galleries will open on September 5th. You can make an appointment or view the online galleries at harrisoncenter.org/buy-art.&nbsp;
Special Senior Hours are every Friday from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. No appointment is needed.
