Director of Consumer Protection Division: Tips To Avoid Tax Scams

ACROSS INDIANA -- It's tax season, and the state attorney's office wants to help you avoid tax scams. According to officials, the usual scam takes place when you answer the phone to hear a caller claiming money is owed to the Internal Revenue Service. They tell you to pay or issue a threat in the chance that you don't. Officials add that the caller often insists on "unconventional" payment terms, like the use of gift cards.

To help you, Betsy DeNardi, director of the Consumer Protection Division for the Office of the Attorney General, recently shared tips for consumers who might be wondering how to handle these situations:
