IMPD Officer Shoots Suspect In Traffic Stop, Weapon Struggle

Traffic shut down on part of east side for police investigation after officer shoots suspect in traffic stop, struggle over weapon.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — An area on the city's east side is shut down to traffic as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigates after an officer shot a suspect Thursday afternoon, WXIN reported. According to the news report, IMPD said officers were called to the 9900 block of East 16th Street near Mitthoeffer Road just after 12:30 p.m., on a report of shots fired, stemming from a traffic stop less than 10 minutes earlier.

According to WXIN, IMPD Deputy Chief Chris Bailey said the driver of the stopped car was acting "evasive" and officers reportedly saw a weapon when they asked him to get out of the car.

A struggle then took place between the suspect and an officer, leading an officer to use a taser, which Bailey said was ineffective. Bailey added that as the struggle continued, one of the officers fired a gunshot, hitting suspect, WXIN reported.
