Indianapolis City-County Councilor Proposes Assault Weapons Ban

City-county councilor William Oliver introduces assault weapons ban and encourages discussion: Report

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - An Indianapolis councilor shared his effort to try and decrease the amount of local gun violence during a meeting Monday night. WTHR reports City-County Councilman William Oliver's resolution was presented by asking his fellow councilors to have a public discussion about gun violence, adding that the shooting death of 1-year-old Malaysia Robson nearly two weeks ago was the "last straw." The news source says Oliver hopes the council can send their recommendations to state lawmakers which would in turn lead them to focus on the gun control issue.

"Many in our community want something done and that is what I'm proposing to do," Oliver said according to WTHR.

However, council members including Michael McQuillen said that although dialogue is fine, a resolution like this has "no teeth behind it," WTHR reports, adding there are other ways to get the attention of Indiana lawmakers.

While WTHR says Oliver is calling his resolution an assault weapons ban, he's essentially just asking his team members to have a discussion which would encourage state lawmakers to take on the gun control issue.
