Indianapolis Public Schools' Board Approves Resolution In Support Of The Asian American And Pacific Islander Community

The Indianapolis Public Schools Board of School Commissioners approved a resolution reaffirming support for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community on Thursday, March 25. The resolution strives to create a place where individuals and families of all backgrounds feel safe, and are treated with respect, dignity, and are recognized for their contributions to building a strong and vibrant school corporation.

“This past June, this body adopted the Racial Equity Mindset Commitment and Action Policy,” said Evan Hawkins, board president. “That policy drew a line in the sand and demands IPS respects and honors the richness of our diverse school communities and our shared and often painful histories. It renewed IPS’ commitment to justice — justice our Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters so deserve.”

The resolution states, in part:

The Indianapolis Public Schools Board of Commissioners denounces discrimination, harassment and violence against any individual or community, including those of Asian American or Pacific Islander descent or perceived as such. We call upon our school community to denounce these acts and to make extra effort to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, staff and members of the IPS community.

The resolution was passed unanimously at the March Board Action Session Thursday, March 25, 2021.
