Indy 2-Year-Old Had Quadruple Amputation From 'Mystery Illness'
The Indianapolis boy's sudden fever, symptoms from 'mystery illness' led to the amputation of his limbs.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The parents of a 2-year-old Indianapolis boy said their child remains strong after a mystery illness last month forced doctors to amputate the bottom half of his four limbs, WXIN said. According to the news report, Jeremiah started running a fever in late September, the day after his family spent time playing at Rhodius Park on the city's west side. Mom Ashley Cox, who just began maternity leave, and dad Nicholas Thompson brought him to Riley Children's Hospital\, where his health quickly worsened as bruise-like marks began covering his body, WXIN said.
Thompson told WXIN the doctors called the condition Purpura, which causes blood vessels to burst, although the cause of the sudden symptoms is still unknown.
Doctors in the emergency room gave Jeremiah an antibiotic which eventually got rid of the illness, WXIN said. However, before the illness was out of Jeremiah's body, his limbs lost pulse from the damage, leading doctors to amputate all of his limbs below the elbows and knees in order to save his life.

Although it's not clear when Jeremiah will be able to go home from the hospital, Cox and Thompson told WXIN Riley saved their son. The news report said Cox is fearful for when Jeremiah realizes life is different. However, Jeremiah remains upbeat and his parents remain thankful for their son.
