Indy Firefighter Arrested For Domestic Battery, Strangulation

Officials say an Indianapolis firefighter was arrested for strangulation, domestic battery in Rush County after several incidents: Report

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) officials say one of their firefighters has been suspended without pay after he was recently arrested in Rush County. IFD says they were notified Monday morning by the Rush County Sheriff's Department of off-duty Private Landon Colip's arrest, which according to WRTV happened Friday after an interview with Rush County deputies. According to WRTV, 36-year-old Colip was arrested and charged with strangling and beating a woman in front of a child several times.

WRTV says Colip is charged with strangulation, domestic batter and intimidation following several incident reports from the victim, who told detectives the first took place on Nov. 12 when she was building a fence on a farm, and Colip got angry and "smacked her head" so hard that she hit the fence post. WRTV reports the victim said later that same day Colip pushed her to the ground and began "striking her in the head" with an open hand.

The victim said a month later another incident took place, telling police that she was shoved several times by Colip, and he also pulled her up by her hair after she fell in the hog barn and struck her head. WRTV says the woman provided video evidence of this incident to police, as detailed in the report.

During two other incidents in January, the victim claims Colip got angry, once because she didn't pick up his prescriptions, and pushed her back against a counter and started strangling her as he said "nighty night."

IFD Chief Ernest Malone says Private Colip has been suspended without pay for 30 days, and then will be placed in an administrative position until the case is finalized. He will not be allowed at IFD Stations and won't be responding on runs and/or assisting the community. Chief Malone adds that Private Colip has also been directed to an employee assistance program (EAP).
