Keith Busse To Sell Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Collection

Keith Busse is parting with his 16 Indianapolis 500 pace cars next month at an auction: Report

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- We're nearly a month away from the 102nd Running of the Indianapolis 500, and before the big day is here, Keith Busse is getting ready to auction off his Corvette Indianapolis 500 pace car collection. The Journal Gazette reports the 74-year-old's collection of pace cars from 1978 to 2017 will be auctioned off during the spring sale of Mecum Auctions from May 15 to 19 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Busse, the co-founder and retired chairman of the board of Fort Wayne's Steel Dynamics Inc., has been collecting the cars for 30 years, according to The Journal Gazette.

But why sell them? According to the news report, Busse says he's running out of space to store his collection. However, he has other Corvettes and five exotic sports cars, so he won't be left with too much empty space.

The Journal Gazette reports some of Busse's cars were used at the track in other ways, as not all of them paced the annual race.

Next month, someone else will own the cars, which includes a rare threesome of three different styles of General Motors sports cars that were designed as pace cars for the 2004 race, The Journal Gazette reports.
