Local Woman Nominated for Community Award

Wendi Haley, Greenwood, Indiana resident, is nominated for the first-ever LUNG FORCE Impact Award for her work to raise awareness to end lung cancer in honor of her mother, the American Lung Association in Indiana announced today.

In 2014, Haley’s mother was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. Over the next two years, she served as one of several caregivers to her mother while she endured chemotherapy and radiation, including brain radiation. Through all of her treatments, Haley’s mother never missed special events, trips and holidays with her family. After a final trip to visit family her health declined and entered home hospice care in June 2016. She passed away in August 2016.

“It is because of her determination to live that I have chosen to make myself available to LUNG FORCE and to do what I can to educate, raise awareness and fundraise to help in efforts that might lead to treatments and an end to lung cancer,” said Haley. “One statistic stays with me, every five minutes a woman finds out she has lung cancer. People are stunned when I share with them that more women die from lung cancer than from breast cancer.”

Haley is one of three people who were nominated for the first-ever LUNG FORCE Impact Award, which will be presented on May 11 at the LUNG FORCE Glam! Luncheon. The luncheon also includes a red carpet entrance, a fashion show and inspiring speeches.

“Wendi has been an outstanding volunteer for the Lung Association. She strives to help others through education, raising awareness and raising money to find better treatments and a cure for lung cancer,” said Tanya Husain, the executive director of the Lung Association. “She has made it her mission to serve our organization so that fewer daughters, mothers, wives and grandmothers will be diagnosed with lung cancer.”
