Jason Brown Charged With The Murder Of Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allan

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Jason Brown, the man accused of shooting and killing Southport police lieutenant Aaron Allan will not appear in court until Aug. 9, a second delay for Brown's initial court hearing, RTV6 reports. The 28-year-old was supposed to attend an initial court hearing scheduled for Tuesday, but was not medically cleared, moving the court date to Thursday, according to RTV6. The news source also adds Brown's new court date will be Wednesday, Aug. 9 if there are no medical setbacks.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Southport police lieutenant Aaron Allan, RTV6 reports. Jason Brown was formally charged Tuesday with murder and possession of marijuana, and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, according to RTV6. The shooting death of Lt. Allan took place Thursday, July 27 when the police official was assisting Homecroft Police Department Major C.T. Bowman at a car crash scene, where a blue 2004 BMW with the license plate "INKMAN" landed on its top in a front yard at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Maynard Drive, RTV6 reports.

According to RTV6, Allan was hit 11 times, including once in the heart, as reported in updated charging documents.

Two other law enforcement officers who had responded to assist, Homecroft Chief John Ryan and an off-duty Johnson County deputy, both returned fire, striking Brown. (According to RTV6, an earlier report cited that Major Bowman had fired shots at Brown, but the most recent charging documents clarified the second officer to return fire was Chief Ryan.)

Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allan was shot and killed Thursday while trying to help car crash victims in Southern Marion County, IndyStar reports. Lt. Allan was walking up to a car that had flipped during a crash around 3 p.m., when a passenger in the vehicle shot him several times, IndyStar reports. The news source adds Lt. Allan was pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital Thursday afternoon.

According to IndyStar, an officer with the Homecroft Police Department and an off-duty Johnson County Sheriff's deputy assisted on scene, taking both passengers to Eskenazi Hospital while in police custody.

Just after 7 p.m. Thursday, Indiana State Police tweeted condolences to the Southport Police Department: "We grieve with over the loss of Lt. Aaron Allen who was shot and killed when trying to render aid to car crash victims." The shooting death of Lt. Allan took place just hours after Indianapolis Metro Police Department Deputy Chief James Waters passed away following a car accident Sunday afternoon in Hendricks County, as reported by IMPD. IMPD reports Chief Waters will be laid to rest Wednesday, Aug. 2 during funeral services at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.
