While some offices will be closed during Columbus Day 2017 on Oct. 9, some will remain open in addition to certain businesses.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Columbus Day is Monday, Oct. 9. If you didn't realize this, just chalk it up to the fact that this federal holiday doesn't fall on the same date every year. Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday of October in the U.S.

Patch put together a quick list of what Indy-area offices, agencies, services and businesses are open and closed on Columbus Day 2017:

  • Indianapolis Public Schools: On Fall Break
  • Carmel, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern Schools: Open
  • Indianapolis Public Library branches: Closed for staff recognition.
  • U.S. Post Office: Closed, and there will be no mail delivery service.
  • Trash Service: Set to run as scheduled if Monday is your trash pick-up day.
  • Retailers, Restaurants, Bars and Other Businesses: Open, but you might want to check the hours of small, locally run businesses.
  • Federal, state and county offices: Closed, however Indianapolis city offices will remain open.
