• News briefs: Crossing guard applications, college financial aid and more (chicagotribune.com) — Merrillville residents can join a free "Building Brain-Healthy Habits" program Monday at the Merrillville Branch Library, with tips on nutrition, sleep, exercise, and other routines that may support long-term brain health. The same workshop repeats Oct. 26 in Lowell, and registration is required by calling either library. The briefs also highlight local college arts events and FAFSA help sessions in nearby communities.
   

• NIPSCO and Indiana FFA Foundation Support Agricultural Education (wimsradio.com) — From its Merrillville headquarters, NIPSCO has launched a $100,000 "Focus on the Farm: Applause to AG" grant program with the Indiana FFA Foundation to support agricultural education and student leadership. FFA chapters in NIPSCO's service area, including many near Merrillville, can apply for funding for classroom resources, supervised agricultural projects, travel, and conferences. Applications are due by September 30, with finalists chosen in October.
