Michigan City to host second annual Overdose Awareness event Aug. 30 (wimsradio.com) — Michigan City is inviting residents to a free Overdose Awareness event this Sunday, Aug. 30, at the HOPE Community Center on McClelland Avenue. You can join a short walk to Pullman Park, receive free CPR and Narcan training, and connect with local recovery and support organizations offering resources for families affected by substance use.
2. 34-year-old repeat offender arrested, charged for allegedly touching self in motel parking lot (abc57.com) — Michigan City police arrested a 34-year-old man at the Super 8 Motel on Franklin Street after an officer reported seeing him engaged in lewd behavior in the parking lot. The suspect, previously convicted of public indecency, now faces new felony and misdemeanor charges related to public indecency and nudity.
3. LaPorte County deputy shows recovery progress three months after Michigan City hospital shooting (wndu.com) — Three months after being shot inside Franciscan Health Michigan City, LaPorte County Deputy Jon Samuelson is showing gradual but meaningful recovery, including improved balance and some returning sensation. He's back in inpatient rehab in Illinois and recently reunited with his family dog, while he and his wife continue to thank the community for its support.
4. Novak calls for public hearings, legislative action on utility regulation (indianahousedemocrats.org) — Michigan City's state Rep. Randy Novak is pushing for public hearings and tougher state legislation to better regulate utilities after NIPSCO's widely criticized response to the August 11 derecho power outages. He wants lawmakers to examine high bills and reliability problems before the 2027 session, arguing the legislature must change the rules that govern regulators and hold monopoly utilities to a higher standard.
