1. South Bend announces upcoming road closures on Greenlawn Avenue, MLK Jr. Boulevard (wndu.com) — Drivers in South Bend should prepare for two major road closures starting next week: Greenlawn Avenue will shut down between Sunnymeade and Belmont for water main work from Sept. 28 to Nov. 9, and the MLK Jr. Boulevard/Colfax intersection will close Oct. 2 to Nov. 3 for bridge rehabilitation. Detours will route traffic through nearby city streets, so plan extra travel time and consider alternate routes.
2. Hunt's consulting holds press conference in wake of recent gun violence (abc57.com) — Following recent shootings on Bissell and Eddy streets, a South Bend violence-prevention consultant outlined steps he believes could curb youth gun violence, from internships to mental health support. He's also exploring a Chicago-style system that fines parents when kids repeatedly break curfew, and plans to convene local prevention groups for coordinated action.
3. Beyond Track Circuits Conference (issuewire.com) — A specialized rail-safety conference is coming to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend from November 2–5, bringing engineers and transit leaders to town to discuss next-generation train control technology. Locals connected to transportation, engineering, or Notre Dame may want to note the September 30 registration deadline and the chance to network with national rail professionals visiting the city.
4. 'Did you leave your oven on?' sign at South Bend International Airport goes viral in light-hearted video (abc57.com) — A South Bend native's playful Instagram video about a cheeky Notre Dame Federal Credit Union sign at South Bend International Airport has exploded to more than 25 million views, even landing on national TV. Locals are delighted their hometown airport is in the spotlight, while the creator jokes about how the "Did you leave your oven on?" ad sparked real anxiety and house checks.
5. Friday Night Frenzy: High school football scores and highlights for Sept. 25, 2026 (wndu.com) — Several South Bend high school teams were in action Friday night, with South Bend Saint Joseph topping Elkhart, Penn shutting out South Bend Adams, and Mishawaka Marian blanking South Bend Washington. The roundup also includes South Bend Riley's loss to New Prairie and dozens of other Michiana scores, giving local fans a quick way to see how their teams fared midway through the season.
