1. Suicide prevention in South Bend aims to decrease stigma around mental health (abc57.com) — South Bend residents just gathered at Howard Park for the "Out of the Darkness Walk," drawing about 300 people to confront suicide and mental health stigma together. Organizers stressed starting conversations early with kids and highlighted local crisis help, including Oaklawn's 24-hour services and the 988 Lifeline, as winter approaches and mental health challenges often intensify.
2. Neighbors show concern with city's tree removal plan near Kids Kingdom playground (wsbt.com) — Neighbors in South Bend's Potawatomi Park are pushing back as the city removes 10 trees beside the Kids Kingdom playground to make room for more parking under the River Park Plan. While officials cite diseased trees and promise to plant 33 replacements, longtime volunteers fear lost shade, hotter equipment, and future pressure to remove the beloved community-built playground.
3. Officers honored for work with domestic violence survivors (wndu.com) — In South Bend, YWCA North Central Indiana and community leaders are honoring officers who use the DALE screening tool to better protect domestic violence survivors. The story notes that 100 Hoosiers died from domestic abuse in 2025 and highlights how DALE's 11 questions trigger immediate referrals to the YWCA, alongside activities planned throughout October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
4. Marcus Freeman discusses response to adversity, Jonaz Walton's growth after UNC win (wndu.com) — Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman, speaking in South Bend, praised his team's poise in a 37–26 win at North Carolina and highlighted freshman running back Jonaz Walton's breakout 120-yard performance.
