Ames Animal Shelter Closes Temporarily

The shelter had been open by appointment, but that service has been suspended.

Due to a COVID-19 exposure, the Ames Animal Shelter is temporarily closed. The shelter had been open by appointment, but that service has been suspended. Animal Shelter staff are following established policies for testing and quarantining, and the facility is being cleaned and sanitized.

During the closure, a small crew will visit the shelter throughout the day to care for the animals. However, no public assistance will be provided in person at the shelter or by phone during this time. The shelter will likely remain closed for two weeks.

“Our highest priority is the proper care of our animals and making sure their needs are met,” said Animal Control and Shelter Supervisor Ron Edwards. “We understand this may be inconvenient to our customers, but we appreciate their patience and understanding as we follow established protocols for coronavirus exposure.”

Ames Animal Control will also be unavailable for calls for service during this time. For an animal emergency during the closure, please contact the Ames Police Department's non-emergency number at 515.239.5133. The Police Department will provide responses as needed.

Coronavirus infection is increasing across Story County. To reduce the rate of infection, residents are encouraged to implement the “Cyclones Care” four pillars of healthy behavior promoted by Iowa State University, City of Ames, Story County, Mary Greeley Medical Center, and others. Wear a face covering. Wash your hands frequently. Physically distance from others 6 feet or greater. Stay home if you’re sick.
