Ames Input Sought on No Child Left Behind Waiver
A public meeting will be held 6 p.m. Feb. 7 on state's waiver request for No Child Left Behind Act

The Iowa Department of Education is seeking input through a series of statewide public meetings on a plan to request a waiver from requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, in the Iowa Communication Network Room at , 1921 Ames High Dr., the Iowa Department of Education will use the ICN to make a presentation and provide an opportunity for input from parents and other community members.
The Iowa Department of Education has also scheduled sessions between 9 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 7 to gather input from school superintendents, administrators, board of education members, high school students, and teachers.

In September, the U.S. Department of Education invited states to apply for flexibility from specific requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act in exchange for “rigorous and comprehensive state-developed plans.”
During the public meeting, the Iowa Department of Education will present details about its waiver request, which includes plans to develop assessments that align with the Iowa Core standards and a new accountability system that prioritizes student achievement along with a focus on growth in student achievement.
Iowans who are unable to attend the public meetings can submit comments in writing to wilma.gajdel@iowa.gov until 4 p.m. on February 1.
