Ames Police Use Bait Bikes to Catch Thieves; Ask Residents to Register Bikes
Ames Police Department place bicycles to catch thieves; recommend bicycle registrations to deter thefts.

Ames police have investigated nearly 60 bicycle thefts since June and have caught four thieves in a bicycle theft sting operation, according to a release.
During the month of October the Ames Police Department’s Safe Neighborhoods Team placed bicycles in the areas where the thefts have been occurring.
Four people were arrested for stealing the bicycles and have been charged with fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail, according to a release.

To prevent thefts, the Ames Police Department recommends everyone register their bicycles, use a strong lock and lock the bicycle to a strong fixed object. People who register their bicycle, will help deter bicycle thefts and assist in returning stolen or lost bicycles. The Ames bicycle registration program is simple, free of charge, and never expires. Bicycle owners can fill out a short form, either in person at the locations listed below or on-line. Information is recorded in the police department's system and people who register will receive a sticker with a registration number to affix to their bicycle.
