An Ames police officer saw Dithmart vandalizing a vehicle in a parking lot at 232 Welch Ave. just before 2 a.m., according to a criminal complaint. When the officer talked to Dithmart he smelled alcohol on the suspect's breath and saw that he had watery, bloodshot eyes. The officer told Dithmart to sit on the ground several times, the complaint said, but he refused.
During a search of Dithmart officers said they found a small quantity of marijuana in his front pocket. Officers also discovered that Dithmart had allegedly broken into his girlfriend's apartment, splintering the door frame and damaging a television and other items while she was not at home.
