A Fractured GOP Leads To A 3-Way Iowa Tie

The front-runners in Iowa reveal three different type of factions in the Republican Party.

From Tara:

Check out this excellent overview piece at the Huffington Post by Ryan Grim about the three Iowa caucus frontrunners: Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, and Mitt Romney.

The article does a great job of explaining how little ideological overlap there is among supporters of the three candidates, and how distinct the three groups are within the Republican party here in Iowa.  If forced to pick a second-choice candidate, I am quite certain that few of those three candidates' supporters would choose one of the other two current leaders.

The predicted 3-way tie coming out of Iowa is a bellwether, but it remains to be seen how seriously the party establishment will take the message.  Those who are dismissing Iowa as unrepresentative of the larger national scene would be wise to note that these three factions within the Republican party exist, in varying proportions, across the country.
